2007 Epiphany Purité – Santa Rita Hills
Un-Oaked ~ Chardonnay
Retail: $24.00 Wine Club $20.40
Tasting Notes:
We launched the Purité program last year with the intent of crafting crisp, clean, food-friendly wines that are completely un-oaked and undergo no malolactic fermentation.
The result, of course, is a style that deviates from the traditional “California” style, especially with respect to Chardonnay.
We believe the merits of the program are lighter styled wines that really showcase the varietal character and pair extremely well with popular modern cuisine (if you like sushi, this is the wine for you!). Unlike others who are experimenting with un-oaked Chardonnay, we decided to tap into one of our best vineyard sources – Ashley’s in Santa Rita Hills – for this program.
The result is a wonderful example of Chardonnay fruit flavors – fresh apple and pear - along with some of the minerality and brisk acidity that we’ve always found in Chardonnay from this vineyard. Being fermented and aged 100% in stainless steel really allows these characteristics to shine through in an uninhibited manner that is worth a try. We have one warning: Like us, you may not want to drink oaked Chardonnay any more!
